About This Game

Car Racing 3D is a proper race, not a driving toy. You line up fourth on a coastal road course, the lights go out, and you have three laps to get past three rivals who know the track. Everything that decides a lap time is here: braking zones, a racing line worth finding, kerbs that are quicker than the grass, and a grip limit you can feel through the steering.

The car is grip-limited rather than scripted. Ask for more cornering than the tyres can deliver and it simply will not turn — it runs wide, scrubs speed and you lose two tenths. The fastest way round is the boring one: brake in a straight line, turn in late, wait for the corner to open, then get on the power. The handbrake is there for the hairpin, where the front end alone will not rotate the car.

The circuit itself is generated from a closed spline when the page loads. The asphalt, the kerbs, the barriers, the verges and the minimap in the corner are all built from that one curve, and the rivals read the same curve as their racing line — braking for each corner in proportion to how tight it is, exactly as you should.

How To Race

ThrottleW or the up arrow. The car pulls hardest in the middle of its range, not at the top.
BrakeS or the down arrow. Hold it after you stop and the car goes into reverse.
SteerA and D. Steering lock reduces with speed so you cannot spin yourself on a straight.
HandbrakeSpacebar. Drops rear grip and lets the car rotate. For the hairpin and nothing else.
CameraC, or the camera button, to switch between the chase view and the bonnet.
RecoverR puts you back on the racing line facing the right way if you get beached.

Three things will take more time off your lap than anything else:

  1. Brake in a straight line. Braking and turning at the same time asks the tyres for two things at once and they will give you neither.
  2. Turn in late. Early turn-in feels fast and puts you on the outside kerb at the exit, which is where the grass is.
  3. Use the kerbs. The red and white strips are part of the track. The green on the other side of them is not — it has about half the grip.

Why This Exists

Browser racing games usually cheat. The car is stuck to the road, the corners can be taken flat, and the opponents are on rails that speed up when you do. It looks like racing and feels like nothing, because there is no limit to find and so no skill in approaching it.

This one models the only thing that actually matters in a racing car: the tyres can generate a fixed amount of grip, and you have to spend it on either turning or stopping, never both at full value. Everything interesting about driving fast — trail braking, the late apex, the slow-in-fast-out rule — falls out of that single constraint. It turns out you can get all of it into one HTML file.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Car Racing 3D?

Car Racing 3D is a free 3D racing game that runs in a browser tab. You race three laps of a coastal road course against three rival cars, from a standing start, and the race ends with a finishing position and your best lap time.

How do I control the car?

W or the up arrow is the throttle, S or the down arrow is the brake and then reverse, and A and D steer. The spacebar is the handbrake, which loosens the rear of the car for tight corners. On a phone the same controls appear as pads on the screen.

Why does the car push wide when I turn?

Because the tyres have a grip limit and you have asked for more cornering than they can give. The car turns as hard as the surface allows and no harder, so the fix is to brake earlier, turn in later, and get back on the throttle once the corner opens up.

What happens if I go off the track?

The grass has about half the grip of the asphalt and drags on the car, so you lose time but you are not sent back to the track. The barriers are solid: hitting one scrubs most of your speed and the rivals will be past before you get going again.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Touch pads appear automatically on phones and tablets, with steering on the left and throttle and brake on the right. Holding the phone sideways gives a much better view of the corner ahead.

How is the track built?

The circuit is generated from a closed spline when the page loads. The road surface, kerbs, barriers, grass verges and the minimap are all built from that same curve, and the rival cars use it as their racing line, braking for each corner according to how tight it is.
