About This Tool
Most timelines of Earth cheat. They give the Cambrian explosion as much room as the three billion years before it, because otherwise the diagram would be mostly blank. Deep Time Scroll keeps the blank.
Every event here sits at its true linear position, which means the tool is largely an experience of waiting. That waiting is the information. It is very hard to hold "life was microbial for three billion years" as a fact, and very easy to feel it when your thumb has been moving for thirty seconds and the counter has barely shifted.
How To Use It
- Scroll down. The counter at the top tracks how many years ago you currently are.
- Watch the background. It shifts as the planet does — molten, then rusting, then oxygenated, then green.
- Notice when familiar things arrive. Almost everything you were taught happens in the final tenth.
- If you are short on time, use the skip button. The last one percent contains nearly everything you have a name for.
Why This Exists
Deep time is the single hardest idea in science to actually believe. We can define a billion years, but we cannot picture it, and every intuition we have was built for a lifespan of decades. The result is that people routinely imagine dinosaurs and early humans sharing a landscape, when in fact more time separates Stegosaurus from Tyrannosaurus than separates Tyrannosaurus from us.
A scroll bar is a surprisingly good instrument for fixing this. It converts an abstract number into physical effort, and effort is something the body understands.

Each date is a widely accepted scientific estimate, and the page marks which figures are genuinely contested, such as the earliest evidence of life. Deep time dating carries real uncertainty, often of millions of years, so the numbers are best read as very good approximations rather than exact anniversaries.
Do I have to scroll the whole thing?
No. There is a button that jumps you to the final one percent, where nearly everything you learned in school takes place. Scrolling the whole way is more powerful, but the tool will not punish you for skipping.
