About This Tool

Stillness is a convincing illusion. Sitting in a chair, you feel like nothing is happening — and meanwhile the floor is turning, the planet is falling around a star, and the star is being carried through a galaxy that is itself moving through the universe.

This tool takes one number from you, your date of birth, and turns those four motions into distances you can actually read. The result is faintly absurd: an ordinary person who has never left their own country has still personally travelled further than any spacecraft humanity has ever launched.

How To Use It

  1. Enter your date of birth. Nothing else is needed and nothing leaves your device.
  2. Optionally set your latitude. The Earth spins once a day everywhere, but the circle you ride shrinks the further you live from the equator.
  3. Read the four legs of the journey in order. Each one is roughly ten times larger than the one before it.
  4. Look at the total, then look at how ordinary the room around you is. That is the whole idea.

Why This Exists

We are built to notice change, not constancy. Because the Earth carries us so smoothly, our senses report absolute stillness, and so the mind quietly concludes that nothing is moving at all. It takes arithmetic to correct the impression.

There is something oddly comforting in the correction. On days when it feels like you got nowhere at all, you were still hurled several billion kilometres through the universe — and so was everyone else, at exactly the same speed.

What is The Distance You've Traveled?

It is a free browser tool that takes your date of birth and works out how far you have physically moved through space since that moment, purely from the motion of the Earth, the Sun, and the galaxy. You did not have to go anywhere. The distances are enormous anyway.

How fast am I actually moving right now?

It depends on what you measure against. The Earth's surface spins at up to about 1,674 kilometres per hour at the equator, the Earth orbits the Sun at about 29.8 kilometres per second, the Sun circles the galactic centre at roughly 230 kilometres per second, and our whole solar system moves at about 370 kilometres per second relative to the cosmic microwave background.

Why does my latitude change the spin distance?

The Earth turns once a day no matter where you stand, but the circle you travel shrinks as you move away from the equator. At the equator you sweep about 40,075 kilometres a day. At 60 degrees latitude that circle is only half as wide, and standing exactly at the pole you would simply turn on the spot.

Can these motions be added together?

Not strictly. Each figure is measured against a different reference frame, and the motions point in different and constantly changing directions, so the true path is a complicated spiral rather than a straight line. Each number is honest on its own, and the total is best read as a rough sense of scale rather than an exact odometer reading.

Is my birthday stored or sent anywhere?

No. The whole calculation happens in your own browser. Your date is never uploaded, never stored, and never shared. Close the tab and it is gone.

Does it work on mobile?
