About This Game

Most people are confident they know how big things are, right up until they have to commit to a number. Guess How Big makes you commit. You get a name, a slider, and no reference points at all.

What makes it harder than it looks is that the slider is logarithmic — every equal step multiplies the size rather than adding to it. That is the only way to fit a honeybee and Mount Everest onto one control, and it means your finger covers a factor of ten far faster than your intuition expects. Almost everyone is fine on familiar objects and wildly wrong on everything else.

How To Play

  1. Read the object. The small print tells you exactly what is being measured — a height, a length, a span.
  2. Drag the slider until the number looks right. Arrow keys nudge it precisely.
  3. Lock it in. You will see the true figure, how many times off you were, and a note about the object.
  4. Eight rounds, then a final score out of 800. Being within ten percent is close to perfect; being ten times out scores nothing.

Why This Exists

Because scale is the sense we trust most and calibrate least. We handle small, human-sized things constantly, so those instincts are sharp. Anything bigger than a building or smaller than a coin gets filed under "big" and "small" and never checked again.

A game is the fastest way to find the edges of that. One round of being four times wrong about a blue whale does more for your sense of scale than any diagram.

How is my guess scored?

You are scored on how many times too big or too small your guess was, not on the raw difference. Guessing eleven metres for a ten metre object is excellent, while guessing eleven metres for a one metre object is not, even though both are one metre away. Being within about ten percent scores close to full marks.

Where do the measurements come from?

Each figure is a standard published measurement, and every object states exactly what is being measured, such as the Eiffel Tower to the tip of its antenna or the Statue of Liberty from the base of its pedestal to the torch. Living things use a typical adult size, since no two individuals are identical.

Is anything saved or uploaded?

No. The game runs entirely in your browser. Your best score is kept only on your own device, and nothing you do is uploaded or shared unless you choose to share your score yourself.

Yes. It works on any modern mobile browser, including Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. Dragging the slider with a thumb works well, and you can fine tune your guess with the arrow keys on a keyboard.
