When you press release the characters come apart and drift off, the text is dropped from memory, and there is genuinely nothing left. No drafts folder, no undo, no history. Why This Exists
Writing something down and then destroying it is an old practice, and it works for a reason that has nothing to do with technology. Putting a feeling into words forces it to take a shape, and a shape is easier to look at than a fog. Knowing in advance that nobody will read it removes the last bit of editing you do even in a private diary.
There is also something specific about watching the words physically leave rather than simply pressing delete. Deletion is administrative. Dissolution is a small ceremony, and the ceremony is most of the point.
