Drift Yard

An empty industrial lot, a scattering of cones, and a rear-drive car that will only go sideways if you make it. No laps. No finish line. Just angle, speed and the nerve to hold it.

About This Game

Drift Yard takes everything else away. There is no circuit to learn, no rival to beat and nothing to arrive at. There is a slab of concrete about the size of two football pitches, a fence, some cones, and a rear-wheel-drive car that grips perfectly well until you decide it shouldn't.

The whole game is one number climbing while you are sideways. Points accrue from your speed multiplied by your angle, so a fast shallow slide and a slow enormous one are worth roughly the same, and the multiplier climbs the longer you keep a single slide alive. But nothing counts until you straighten up. Bin it into a cone halfway through a forty-second link and the entire pending total goes with it.

The handling is a two-axle model rather than a set of animations. Each axle has a slip angle, a cornering stiffness and a friction budget it must split between turning and driving, and weight moves forwards and backwards over the car as you accelerate and brake. The handbrake cuts rear grip to roughly four tenths of normal, which is the entire reason the back end steps out at all.

How To Drift

ThrottleW or the up arrow. Once the rear is spinning, throttle is what holds the angle.
BrakeS or the down arrow. Hold it at a standstill for reverse.
SteerA and D. In a slide you steer away from the corner, not into it.
HandbrakeSpacebar. Half a second is plenty. Any longer and you are just spinning.
CameraC, or the camera button, for chase or a low bumper view.
RecoverR drops you back in the middle of the yard, pointing down the long side.

The loop that produces every big score is the same four moves:

  1. Build speed first. Below about 40 km/h there is not enough energy in the car to sustain a slide at all, and you will simply spin.
  2. Break traction on purpose. Turn in, then a short stab of handbrake. The car rotates because the rear has nothing left to give.
  3. Catch it, then feed it. Countersteer the instant the back steps out and get on the throttle. Too little and it snaps straight, too much and you go round.
  4. Straighten up while you are still moving. The score is only yours once the car is pointing where it is going again.

Why This Exists

Drifting is unusual among driving skills in that it has no destination. There is no corner to get round and no lap to shorten — the entire point is to hold a car in a state it is actively trying to leave. That makes it the purest test of whether a driving game has modelled anything at all, because you cannot fake it with a bigger grip number.

Everything here falls out of one idea: a tyre can only push so hard in total, and it has to spend that on turning or on driving, never both at full value. Take the rear's share away with the handbrake and the car rotates. Give it back gradually with the throttle and the rotation holds. Give it back all at once and you are pointing at the fence. Nothing else needed adding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Drift Yard?

Drift Yard is a free 3D driving game that runs in a browser tab. There is no track, no lap and no finish line — only an empty industrial lot, some cones and two minutes to build the biggest drift score you can.

How do I start a drift?

Get above about 40 km/h, turn in, and pull the handbrake for roughly half a second. The rear axle loses most of its grip and the back of the car steps out. Release the handbrake, steer the other way, and feed in throttle to hold the angle.

Why does my score keep resetting to zero?

Points are pending while you are sideways and only bank when you straighten up cleanly. Hitting a cone or a wall while a slide is running throws the pending points away, and so does spinning past about a hundred degrees. The multiplier climbs the longer a single slide lasts.

Does the car ever stop sliding on its own?

Yes. A drift is a tyre scrubbing sideways, and scrubbing costs speed — around three metres per second every second at a big angle. Left alone the car slows until the rear grips again. Holding a slide means feeding it speed, which is most of the skill.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Touch pads appear automatically on phones and tablets, with steering on the left and throttle, brake and handbrake on the right. Holding the phone sideways gives a much wider view of the lot.

Is the handling actually simulated?

It is a two-axle model with slip angles, saturating tyres, weight transfer under acceleration and braking, and a friction budget each axle has to split between turning and driving. The handbrake cuts rear grip to about four tenths of normal, which is why it works at all.
