Why This Exists

Because "the oldest living thing" is a question that quietly falls apart the moment you press on it, and the falling apart is more interesting than any single answer. Is a colony of 47,000 genetically identical aspen stems one organism or a forest? If every cell in it has been replaced many times over, what exactly is the thing that is 16,000 years old?

There is also something steadying about the list. These organisms have lived through every event you have ever read about, and registered almost none of them. A bristlecone that was already ancient when the pyramids were being built has spent the entire span of human civilisation adding a fraction of a millimetre a year and paying no attention whatsoever.

Individuals are still eaten, infected and killed constantly, so no ancient one is known to exist. It escapes ageing rather than surviving it.
