About This Puzzle

Everyone has stood in front of a shelf holding one last object, certain it will go in, and been wrong. The Impossible Bookshelf is that moment, twelve times, with the reassurance that it definitely does go in — because the shelf was packed before the puzzle was written.

Each shelf comes with a set of household objects whose volumes add up to exactly the volume of the shelf. Not approximately. Exactly. There is no slack anywhere, which means there is no such thing as a nearly-right placement: every object has to be in the one position and orientation that leaves a hole shaped precisely like everything still in the tray.

The objects are rigid, so you cannot squeeze anything, and they are genuinely three-dimensional — a teapot has twenty-four distinct orientations and you will need more of them than you expect. What you cannot do is cheat the volume. That number is the whole puzzle.

Every Shelf Is Provably Solvable

Packing puzzles have an obvious failure mode: the designer builds something that looks hard, ships it, and it turns out to be impossible. Players spend an hour on a puzzle with no answer.

These were generated the other way round. An exact-cover solver fills the shelf first, choosing objects at random until the space is completely and perfectly consumed, and only then is the resulting object list handed over as a puzzle. A perfect fit is guaranteed to exist because a perfect fit is where the puzzle came from.

The same solver then counts how many different perfect fits each shelf has, treating identical objects as interchangeable so the number means something. That count is how the twelve are ordered — the early shelves have hundreds of valid answers and forgive a lot, the later ones have far fewer relative to their size.

How To Play

  1. Pick an object from the tray on the left. It appears in the shelf as a translucent ghost.
  2. Move it with the six arrows — four for up, down, left and right, and two for forward and back through the depth of the shelf.
  3. Turn spins it about the upright axis; Tip rolls it forward. Together they reach all twenty-four orientations.
  4. Green ghost means it fits. Red means part of it is outside the shelf or inside something else. Press Place when it is green.
  5. Drag the background to swing the camera round and check the back of the shelf. This is not optional on the deeper puzzles.
  6. On a computer: arrows and W S move, Q and E rotate, Space places, Z undoes.

How To Actually Solve One

  • Big and awkward first. The globe and the records have the fewest places they can possibly go. Put them in while the shelf is empty and you still have a choice; leave them till last and you will not.
  • Corners are precious. A corner can only be filled by a shape with a matching corner. If you fill your corners with straight books early, the L-shaped things have nowhere to live.
  • Count what is left. If a gap is five cells and everything remaining is even-sized, something earlier is wrong. The arithmetic is often faster than the visualising.
  • Watch for one-cell holes. Nothing in the set is a single cube, so a gap of one is always fatal. If you can see one forming, stop and take a piece back.
  • Undo freely. It only costs you a star, and being stubborn costs you the puzzle.

Why This Exists

Spatial reasoning is the one form of intelligence almost nobody practises deliberately. We rehearse arithmetic, we rehearse words, and we leave rotating objects in our heads entirely to chance and to the occasional wardrobe.

It is also unusually honest as a puzzle: there is no trivia, no vocabulary, no reading speed, nothing you could have revised. Either you can see how the teapot goes in the corner or you cannot yet. The gap between those two states is about fifteen minutes of trying, which is a remarkably good deal.

Why will it not let me place something?

The ghost outline turns red when any part of the object is outside the shelf or overlapping something already placed, and the offending cells are marked. Objects are rigid and cannot be squeezed, so if it is red there is genuinely no room in that position and orientation.

How do the stars work?

One star is for filling the shelf at all. The second is for doing it having taken back six objects or fewer, and the third for taking back two or fewer. Undoing costs nothing but the star, so exploring freely is fine when you are stuck.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. It works on modern mobile browsers including Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Tap an object in the tray, use the arrows to move it and the turn and tip buttons to rotate it, then press place. Drag the background to swing the camera around and check the back of the shelf.
